HOW DID THE MUSIC PROJECT COME ABOUT?

Jo Levine, Music Therapist, and Will Lawton, trainee Music Therapist, are currently providing a full day of music therapy sessions at Larkrise School for groups and individual children with a wide variety of complex needs.  Music therapy uses music as a tool for communication, interaction and self-expression, with specific aims including helping pupils to develop their self-esteem, emotional wellbeing, communication and social skills.  For more information about music therapy – www.bamt.org

Jo and Will built up a weekly passing conversation with ‘Becky the Artist’ during their busy Fridays in school, and were enjoying hearing about her work.  Rebecca Churchill then asked them to provide some recorded original and spontaneously improvised music, to create a soundscape for the Multi Sensory Art Project interactive dome installation in May 2017.  The main themes that were selected to focus and inspire the music included ‘the world around us’, ‘white space’ and ‘mirrors’.  Some of the instruments that the children have access to in their music therapy sessions can be heard in the soundscape.

WHO IS INVOLVED WITH THE MUSIC?

WILL LAWTON

www.willlawtonmusic.co.uk

A singer-songwriter, pianist and hang player from Wiltshire.  Will works professionally as a musician and is currently recording his first solo album due to be released towards the end of 2017.  Will is currently training as a Music Therapist at UWE.

JO LEVINE

Jo works as a freelance Music Therapist with adults and children in Somerset and Wiltshire and works with Soundwell Music Therapy Trust (www.soundwell.org).  A pianist and piano accordionist, Jo currently performs with The Hazir Ensemble (www.facebook.com/hazirensemble).

MUSIC THERAPY STUDENTS AT UWE

Fourteen students studying for a masters degree in Music Therapy performed two improvisations using photographic images as inspiration.  The students used instruments including voice, agogo bells, ocean drum, tambourine, cabassaa, chimes, tube chime, cymbal, rain stick, thumb piano, lyre, xylophone, sitar, floor drum, hang, violin, maraca, recorder, bell, guitar and piano.
